Ramachandrapuram is in Surapoondi Panchayat which has 8 hamlets with a total population of 3150. It has predominant Dalit(SC) population 0f 1650 and tribal population of 380. Ramachandrapuram with 48 households (around 200 populations) face acute water scarcity. These families were previously residing in Gummidipoondi town near the Railway station and were relocated (due to Railway track extension) in the panchayat land in Ramachandrapuram. The place is geographically located in a slightly higher altitude and the water from the overhead tank located on the other side of the village does not reach the hamlet creating a great difficulty in accessing water by these households.
The adults, mostly men, are employed as casual labor in private companies in the industrial estate in Gummidipoondi. The families are not yet enrolled in Rural Employment Guarantee Programme for some reason. CRUSADE has formed two PwD groups in the panchayat, one in Surapoondi village with 15 members and the second in Ramachandrapuram with 9 Pwds. The groups are functioning well. CRUSADE is taking up this water project at the request of PwD group members in the hamlet. CRUSADE has done the water divining in the location and spotted the point for bore well and the report recommended depth of 150-200 feet for the bore well ( Photo below and the divining report in the attachment ).
