Crusade

Centre for Rural Systems and Development (CRUSADE), founded in 1991, works closely with communities to alleviate poverty and to bring about sustainable changes that improve the lives and livelihoods of the poor. CRUSADE works in around 200 villages in four development blocks of Minjur, Sholavarm, Ellapuram and Gummidipoondi in rural Tiruvallur district, north of Chennai, covering 250,000 population.

Village sponsorship Program

Launched in 2017 with the support of the Salt of the Earth Foundation, the Village Sponsorship Program partners with local communities and schools to address their most pressing needs. The programme is tailored to each village based on local priorities, focusing on critical priorities like clean water access, school renovations, health care,infrastructure, and sanitation. Currently, the program supports four villages across Gummidipoondi, Ellapuram, and Minjur Blocks.

School Renovations, Infrastructure, and Sanitation

CRUSADE collaborates with government schools to ensure they have safe, functional infrastructure for students. CRUSADE involvement includes:

  • Relaying roofs
  • Repairing doors and windows
  • Installing floor tiles
  • Plastering wall cracks
  • Upgrading restrooms
  • Providing tables, chairs, and water tanks
  • Installing public address systems
  • Supplying uniform materials
  • Adding a napkin incinerator for safe disposal

Vocational Training

CRUSADE supports women’s economic independence by offering tailoring training and sewing machines. In some cases, women contribute a small amount toward the cost, showing their commitment to their success.


Health-care

Organising cancer screening camps (for cervical and breast cancer among women), eye camps (for cataract surgery of the elderly and vision correction) and general homeopathy mobile clinics


Environment

The program promotes sustainability by distributing fruit tree seedlings, vegetable seeds for kitchen gardens and awareness campaigns on climate change.
